Job Description / Essential Elements

Primary Function: To plan and perform assessments, occupational therapy activities, provide consultation and report on the results of treatment for students. Must be able to distinguish the difference between educationally vs. medically necessary occupational therapy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Works in a school-based program to plan and administer occupational therapy treatments for school children. Evaluates children and plans individual treatment programs and administers therapeutic exercises. Instructs children in self-care activities, sensory motor, and daily living skills, including but not limited to:

  • Feeding
  • Visual
  • Perceptual
  • Fine motor skills

Adapts games, crafts, and other related activities appropriately. Instructs school children and their families in the use of special equipment. Consults with families in suitable activities for continuation of treatments at home. Provides in-service training for school personnel. Instructs and assists teachers, aides, and other school personnel in the implementation of the OT program. In selected cases, carries out instructions of the physician in charge of the individual case as to the occupational therapy prescribed. Attends and participates in team conferences/IEP meetings designed to evaluate a child's educational needs. Keeps notes and records and makes reports on individual children. Performs related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

Knowledge of therapeutic techniques, activities, adaptive equipment, and equipment used in occupational therapy treatment and skills in their application. Knowledge of principles involved in the application of active and passive motion as applied to conditions resulting from disease, injury, or conditions at birth. Knowledge of neuromuscular development as well as growth and development of children. Knowledge of physical and psychological problems with therapy patients and their families. Ability to administer occupational therapy treatments with skill. Ability to teach the disabled the fundamentals of self-care and other suitable activities. Ability to explain and teach therapeutic activities to staff and consult with parents. Ability to prepare reports and keep records of case histories. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including teachers, teacher aides, school administrators, parents, foster parents, equipment vendors, and physicians. Graduation from an accredited program in Occupational Therapy. Certificate of registration with the American Association of Occupational Therapists. Certification by the Center for the Study of Sensory-Integration Dysfunction or similar training desired, but not required.

A pre-requisite for employment as an Instructional Assistant is the proof of passing the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Test for the Napa Valley Unified School District. EXCEPTIONS TO TAKING THIS TEST ARE:

  • Possession of a current California Teacher Credential
  • Possession of an AA degree or higher
  • At least 48 units
  • OR CBEST (California Basic Education Skills Test)
